Male Sexual Health Reports – Finding and Treating the Causes of Erectile Dysfunction (ED)
By Serge Taylor
The causes of erectile dysfunction (ED) can be physiological and or psychological.
If you suffer with any form of ED you need to discuss it with your doctor.
By visiting your doctor you can determine the cause of your erectile dysfunction and get the correct treatment from the start. If you find that there is no physical reason for your condition then a doctor is the best person to refer you to the appropriate psychologist or perhaps even a sex therapist to help you.
Some physiological cause of erectile dysfunction can be increased cholesterol, hypertension, and diabetes. By seeing your doctor and being tested you will be able to find out or eliminate these factors before you start treatment.
Obviously age can be a factor for a number of reasons including the increased chance of developing one of the above conditions as we get older.
These kinds of health complaints can create artery hardening that will restrict normal blood flow throughout the body, including of course the penis.
Additionally, long term diabetes can also lead to damaged nerves and damage to smaller blood vessels. Many men with erectile problems will often have diabetes or pre diabetes issues that need to be addressed.
Today there are a number of commonly used prescription medications that can lead to ED.
Drugs for hypertension as well as drugs for heart problems, anti depressant meds, and a number of sedatives and tranquilizers all affect a man’s ability to achieve and maintain an erection. Many freely available over the counter meds can also lead to erection problems.
If you are on medication of any kind and begin to notice a loss of erectile function then you need to check immediately with your doctor to make the needed changes.
And of course illegal drug abuse that has been ongoing will also affect your ability to achieve and maintain an erection.
And it’s not just women who have hormonal imbalances. Many men, and especially so as they approach middle age, can suffer with hormonal issues that can lead to ED.
Lowered testosterone levels can lead to a loss of sexual desire (lowered libido) as well as difficulty getting an erection.
There are other possibly serious side effects of a low level of testosterone that your doctor will be able to identify and help you with.
If you think this could be the cause of your ED then see your doctor ASAP to rule out any serious underlying condition.
Nervous system issues such as spinal cord damage, as well as damage to nerves or brain injury can also lead to erection problems.
The problem with these conditions is one of communication from the brain to the penis. If the correct messages cannot get through, then difficulties with erections and normal sexual function can occur.
Often, their can be post surgical erection difficulty if the surgery was performed in or around the pelvis or genitals.
Peyronie’s Disease is a rare medical condition that can lead to erection dysfunction due to it causing damage and scarring to the tissues of the penis. The damage to penile tissue can lead to pain and distortion of the penis making erection virtually impossible.
Many men suffer from some form of venous leakage which can lead to ED.
What happens in this case is that enough blood will flow to the penis so that an erection can be achieved, but blood will begin to leak almost immediately so the erection will sub-side very quickly making intercourse impossible. The causes of this kind of leakage can be injury to the area or disease.
And then there are the psychological causes of erectile dysfunction.
Day to day stress, depression, simple fatigue, resentment towards your partner, performance anxiety, are just some of the possible mental and emotional causes of erectile dysfunction. And just like the physiological causes of ED they can also be treated once you know what you are dealing with.
Today more and more men are suffering with sexual problems of which ED is just one. The stress that men experience as well as other health concerns that generally speaking men will tend to ignore can all lead to an inability to achieve and maintain an erection. The best advice is to see your doctor to at least find out what is causing your erectile dysfunction issue.
